A new orphan, Kasaï, has arrived at Lola

August 30, 2011

She was supposed to arrive on the 21st of July but after an endless wait at the airport we found out the plane transporting her had been cancelled. Luckily, just two days later she arrived safely on the plane from Lodja! We named her Kasaï, after the Congolese Province from which she came.

When we met her at N’djili airport, this little female, about 18 months old, showed some caution and seemed worried for a few moments but soon understood that we meant her no harm. On the car journey back to Lola she was well behaved but very curious and seemed to appreciate the ride whilst eating bananas and Oranges in Eve (a volunteer)’s arms.

Kasaï and Eve on the day of her arrival.

On arrival at Lola, Kasaï, showed no fear, not of the humans, nor the many cats and dogs at the sanctuary, in fact she quite happily plays with them, being that she is in quarantine and can not yet meet the other little orphan bonobos.

Kasaï showed a few signs of malnutrition, but overall she is in good health, both physically and psychologically.

Welcome to ‘Bonobo Paradise’ Kasaï!

Tickle-time: One of her favourites!

Kasai is a darling–lucky Eve gets to hold her. I am wondering how long she will be in quarantine. Glad to hear she enjoys the dogs and cats. Please keep us up-to-date on how she is adjusting. Thank you!

Quarantine lasts approximately one month… depending on the health status… so seeing as she is doing well she should be joining the nursery group pretty soon… we’ll keep you posted!
